Aurora Friends of the Library

The mission of the Aurora Friends of the Library is to actively support the library in promoting education, intellectual stimulation, and reading enjoyment.

The purpose of the organization is to maintain an association of person interested in the Aurora Public Library; to focus public attention on the library, to stimulate the use of its resources and services; to encourage gifts, endowments and bequests to the library; to support and cooperate with the library in developing library services and facilities, and to support the freedom to read.

The Friends usually hold 4 regular meetings per year (usually the first Tuesday of February, May, September, and December) to learn library news, receive updates on finances and consider fundraisers, consider requests for funding for various library needs, to consider planning special events or programs, and to consider and participate in volunteer projects.

Friends of the Library fundraisers have included ongoing and special book/media sales, library book bags, and special dinners.  Funds have been used to support the children's/teens summer reading program and the adult winter reading program, to purchase new toys for the children's room, to purchase furniture for the library, to fund or support special library events, to fund advertising for library events or new services, to support special library outreaches, and to supplement library collections with funds for additional new books, movies, etc.

The Friends of the Library have planned special author visits or fairs, and they frequently provide hospitality at regular library events.  They usually decorate the library for Christmas (and pack the Christmas decorations up in January!); participate in the annual magazine weeding project; and set up, staff, and pack  up special book sales.  Friends may also scan newspapers and clip articles for the local history file, plan and hold outreach events in the community, and volunteer in other ways.

See the calendar for the next Friends of the Library meeting; all are welcome!
